- SYNOPSIS -

A theatrical experience for Primary School children.

Beginning with a 30-minute theatrical performance based on a classic piece of children’s literature, your students will then continue on with an interactive one-hour Drama session where they will explore and delve further into the story, be able to contextualise the story, and be better prepared to discuss, identify and explore the many themes in the story.

This journey from watching to discussing to participating helps the students to internalise their own feelings and realise their own thoughts on the themes.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love and loss – in short, the human condition. Why are we here? Do we matter? What is the meaning of life? This beautiful story answers these questions by reminding us that while we hurry and scramble in greed and ambition, we are losing our capacities for love, imagination and friendship.

The tale begins when a pilot is stranded in the middle of the Sahara Desert after his troubled plane is forced to land. He meets the Little Prince, from asteroid 325, who then recounts the stories about the other worlds he has been to and the big people that he meets for the very first time – an arrogant king, a self-absorbed man, a lamp lighter, a geographer, a drunkard and a businessman. Having left his love, a beautiful rose, back home, the Little Prince becomes sad and lonely and longs to return to her. In the end, he makes a deal with a poisonous snake who promises him a way back home to his planet.

The Little Prince will be a 30-minute performance held in our ACT 3 Theatre. As soon as the students step inside, they will be transported far away into the African Sahara desert. Using a mix of of poetry, text, song, movement and storytelling with a mystical African soundscape underscoring the piece, our 3 actors will dramatise this well-written allegory which will highlight important themes such as narrow-mindedness, curiosity, truth, love, friendship and innocence.

Right after the performance, the students will participate in a Drama workshop where they will identify, understand and talk about the themes from the story through a class discussion. This will help them to further enlighten their pre-conceived knowledge of the story. They will also get to explore the intentions, feelings, motivations and thoughts of the different characters through the use of Drama tools and strategies. This will help them empathise and understand the characters on a deeper level and make similarities to the people in their lives or around them. Lastly, the students will work in smaller groups to dramatise a scene from the story. This will further enhance their understanding of the story and its themes.
