Poetry Slam™ Basics

- OUTLINE -

In this programme, Word Forward the founder and trademark holder of Poetry Slam™ in Singapore aims to unfold poetry both as written text and an oral form in the setting of a Poetry Slam™ contest. The energy and focus of friendly competition provide an immediate fast-track learning experience in class.

During the last 30 years, Poetry Slam has become a worldwide literary movement bringing millions of listeners and readers back to literature through audience-centred entertainment and social engagement.

Poetry Slam™ programme is practical, energetic and very engaging.

(1) Live performances by the facilitator-poet and sample videos of dynamic Poetry Slam™ performances provide models for the students to emulate through template handout exercises designed to build writing craft and free up the imagination.

(2) On the performance side, working in teams of three or four, students are taken through a programme of graded vocal and physical exercises combining solo stage presentation method and group choral reading techniques, the objective is to build presentation confidence and ability with team support.

Yes, poetry has wheels
Poems run on rails,
Poems soar, or sweep the floor,
Poems dive with whales.
