Off Centre - A Two-Session Workshop

Provide Live Stream sessions on ZoomThis two-session workshop conducted by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma focuses on his landmark play Off Centre, which has been selected by the Ministry of Education to be part of the ‘O’ and ‘N’ level literature syllabus for 2018 and 2019. The sessions serve as an introduction to the context of the play which was created and first staged in 1993, and aim to give students an insight into how the play is translated from page to stage. Students will get to find out more about Off Centre first hand from the playwright himself, as well as watch excerpts of the plays’ stagings by The Necessary Stage in 1993 and 2007. They will also be able to pose questions on character, staging and plot developments to the playwright.
- LEARNING OBJECTIVES -
Students will develop: 1. A greater understanding of the context in which Off Centre is situated, as well as the playwright’s intent in creating the play; 2. An awareness of character development and various plot devices used within the script; 3. An appreciation for the play, its setting, and hopefully, in Singapore theatre and literature in general; 4. A sense of inspiration, given the opportunity to encounter the playwright himself, and to get first-hand accounts about the creation of the play; 5. Spontaneity and appreciation for taking creative risks.

$250 per hour
$500 for 2 sessions x 1 hour each
Schools may use the Tote Board Arts Grant to subsidise the programme cost. There is a subsidy of up to 50% of the programme cost for mainstream schools, and up to 70% of the programme cost for Special Education Schools.
The Tote Board Arts Grant is not applicable to pre-schools. NAC partners selected pre-school centres to receive funding to purchase Pre-School AEP.
The following programme is approved under NAC-AEP 2019-2022 until 31 December 2022.
