Introduction to Interpreting

- OUTLINE -

The "Introduction to Interpreting" Programme will introduce to the students basic interpreting concepts, including qualities of a “good interpreter”, concept of equivalence, working memory and note-taking, as well as a demonstration of basic interpreting techniques. Through lectures and interpreting exercises, students will learn about how the spoken word is used to pass on cultural heritage to the next generation. With a rich trove of oral literature on an array of topics, the conversion of oral narratives from a language other than English is as important as literary translation in promoting intercultural understanding.

- LEARNING OBJECTIVES -

1. Students will acquire knowledge of basic interpreting techniques.
2. Students will develop basic competence in applying this knowledge through in-class exercises;
3. Students will be guided to reflect on various issues relating to cross-language and intercultural communication.
