Drum Prodigy - Percussion Programme for Persons with Special Needs

- OUTLINE -

The Drum Prodigy programme is based on the integration of 3 main aspects - wellness, recreational and educational. It shall serve an integral role in the student’s life, providing them with a non-competitive atmosphere and environment, while creating impact on their social, cognitive, sensory, motor coordination.

Drumming is a healthy way to maintain cognitive functioning, release stress, regulate emotions and strengthen the immune system of persons with special learning needs and disabilities. It combines wellness, celebration and community building. It brings out their inner rhythm and adds new energy to their lives.
They will be introduced to rhythmic activities, vocalisations, sensory percussions. Students will also learn to play on percussions using hands and mallets to produce beats with various entrainment exercises to develop their musicality. Gain physical awareness and experience of music through various sensory movement. Improve their motor skills, social skills, behaviour, build self-confidence. Promote healthy mind and body development through drumming and movements.

• To develop musical/coordination skills, listening, ear-training, and exposure to percussion instruments, rhythmic patterns, and group learning.
• To encourage self-expression through shared music-making.
• To recognise different rhythm patterns.

Schools should be well equipped with appropriate instruments.
Option to purchase or rental of instruments.

Schools may use the Tote Board Arts Grant to subsidise the programme cost. There is a subsidy of up to 50% of the programme cost for mainstream schools, and up to 70% of the programme cost for Special Education Schools.
The Tote Board Arts Grant is not applicable to pre-schools. NAC partners selected pre-school centres to receive funding to purchase Pre-School AEP.

The following programme is approved under NAC-AEP 2019-2021 until 31 December 2021.
