Chinese Dance Onstage: Stories come Alive (2019 - 2021)

Stories come Alive brings famous folk tales to life by displaying the characters of these tales on stage, expressing themselves through dance movements. The performance comes with/ narration (either English or Chinese), allowing students to better make a connection with and understand the story plot.

Schools can choose between "The Nightingale", a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen or "The Magic Lotus Lantern", a Chinese folktale.

Synopsis for The Nightingale:

"The Nightingale” is about an emperor who prefers the singing of a bejewelled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the Emperor is dying, the real nightingale returns and its singing restores his health. Travel into the magical world of ‘The Nightingale’ with our dance performance!

Synopsis for The Magical Lotus Lantern:

This Chinese dance performance tells the tale of forbidden love, magical powers, and a perilous journey taken by a son to free his mother. Follow Chen Xiang as he embarks on a journey to rescue his mother, San Sheng Mu, a kind and beautiful deity, who was imprisoned under Mount Hua by her older brother, Er Lang Shen, for falling in love with a mortal scholar.

Through this programme, 1) students get to learn about the famous folk tale through a different presentation. 2) Students learn about the moral values convey in the story. 3) Students develop interest and understanding towards Chinese dance as part of Singapore's arts and cultural heritage.
