Dance of Asia

Digital Format Available

Various Asian dances will be showcased in this programme, namely the Tinikling dance from the Philippines, the Ramwong dance from Thailand and the Pendet dance from Indonesia.

Pendet is a traditional ritual dance originated from Bali, Indonesia. Traditionally, Pendet is performed with which an offering is made to purify temples or theatres. However, it can also be seen as a welcome dance before the start of a performance.

Ramwong is a Thai folk dance that is performed for entertainment purposes. Dancers will wear the famous Thai brass nails to accentuate its graceful hand movements.

Tinikling is a popular traditional Philippines dance, which imitates the movement of a local bird known as 'tikling'. It involves two people on the ground beating and tapping bamboo poles against each other and on the ground. This will co-ordinate with dancers who will step over and in between the poles.

The programme will end with audience participation of the Tinikling dance.

Students will be exposed to various Asian dances through this programme. Brief history and description of each dance will be presented to the students by the emcee who will facilitate the programme. Also, with the hands-on experience of the Tinikling, we hope to inculcate interest in students to traditional dances of the region.
