Poetry Slam™ Workshop

- OUTLINE -

Word Forward (WF), the founder and trademark holder of Poetry Slam™ in Singapore, has been nurturing and publishing the leading performance poets as well as promoting poetry slam, performance poetry and spoken word through regular workshops, programmes and events, both in the public and educational spheres since 2003.

Poetry Slam™ is the competitive art of writing and performing poetry, staged as a friendly 1, 2 or 3-round contest. Within the last 30 years, it has become a worldwide literary movement, bringing thousands of listeners and readers back to poetry through its ability to engage with diverse ages and social groups. In Singapore, Poetry Slam™ is a regular feature in the literary scene.

The limited notion of poetry as an exclusively solo and ‘lonely’ art form is thus radically altered in the minds of students forever widening its scope and returning it to something closer to the classical model of Greek epic theatre once enjoyed by a mass audience.

- LEARNING OBJECTIVES -

To open avenues for imaginative self-expression: the poet dramatises elements of his or her personality breaking at the outset the ‘fourth wall’ to connect with an audience

To bring poetry, the root form of literature study to young people in an accessibly-relevant way and demonstrate that it is still a highly-engaging oral art form in the tradition of Homer and Shakespeare.

To embrace the collaborative nature of group dynamics and peer-to-peer education.

To enhance overall confidence and self-esteem of participants by giving them opportunities to perform for peers and the public.
