Guitars & Musicals - An Intimate Blending of Sounds
- OUTLINE -
The nylon-string guitar ensemble trio teams up with talented soprano singer Karen Lau to create a refreshing programme which demonstrates the long-standing relationship between guitar and voice. Songs from musicals are featured here to bring out the melodic and timbral qualities of the classical guitar. Coupled with informative narrations and friendly dialogue with the students, the programme will seamlessly integrate education and music. With this new approach, this programme will definitely empower them to explore another level of music understanding. Some of the highlights of the programme are: - A Guitar Ensemble trio arrangement of Bizet's Carmen. The musical intricacies of guitar ensemble performance will be explained and demonstrated. - 'I Could Have Danced All Night', an uplifting standard in the musical literature is given a milder sonic treatment with classical guitars. - 'Bunga Sayang' by Singaporean composer Dick Lee will feature the vocals of Karen accompanied by the trio of classical guitars. - 'All I Ask of You' from The Phantom of the Opera is rarely heard in this musical setting. - 'Down By The Salley Gardens' is a traditional which features a very unique instrument, the FOLKHARP.
- LEARNING OBJECTIVES -
Our learning objectives: 1. To allow students to appreciate the musical capabilities of a Classical Guitar Trio and understand the various ensemble methods available in music-making. They can form their own trios after observing and understanding the mechanics behind this miniature chamber group. 2. To give students the opportunity to imbibe the close relationship between the voice and guitar, and how this can be realised through musical theatre works. By way of various musical styles within the musical theatre genre, students will be exposed to the rich tapestry of sounds possible within this musical framework. 3. To introduce the FOLK HARP to a wider audience and appreciate its versatility as an accompanying instrument. 4. To elevate students' awareness to the versatility of a guitar trio by way of the wide-ranging repertoire presented.
