Traditional Batik Painting


Batik is a significant heritage of our South East Asian culture. It is a traditional art form as well as a unique medium for contemporary art. This programme is a safe and systematic introduction to the art of real batik painting. Students will be guided by our skilled batik artists on the use of essential tools and techniques as well as the history and cultural relevance of batik in Asian clothing traditions.

Learn to use traditional tools such as the tjanting to create authentic batik paintings with composite wax. Lesson will also include dyeing techniques and how to make fabrics colour-fast.


1. Understand the traditional way of making batik; Clothing traditions of our region; Identify different types of batik i.e. tulis, tjap, prints.
2. Awareness of medium used by pioneer painters and discover the potential of Batik as a medium in contemporary expression.
3. Safe experience of creating a traditional batik painting.
4. Develop fine-motor skills and process planning

Schools may use the Tote Board Arts Grant to subsidise the programme cost. There is a subsidy of up to 50% of the programme cost for mainstream schools, and up to 70% of the programme cost for Special Education Schools.
The Tote Board Arts Grant is not applicable to pre-schools. NAC partners selected pre-school centres to receive funding to purchase Pre-School AEP.

The following programme is approved under NAC-AEP until 31 December 2016.
